White House Debuts Postpartum Medicaid Plan

“Maternal health is a growing concern,” CMS Administrator Seema Verma said at a Kaiser Family Foundation event on June 12, 2019. CMS will be focusing on different ways to improve maternal health in rural areas, including expanding Medicare access to telehealth services and promoting policies to help prevent rural hospital closures. In its March 2019 report to Congress, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission said that 65 hospitals closed from 2015 to 2017, and of those closures 65% were in states that didn’t expand Medicaid and 52% were in rural counties.
