Rural Hospitals Hard Hit as Pandemic Spreads

Before the pandemic, 47 percent of rural providers operated in the red. Since 2010, 128 rural hospitals have closed, with more rural hospitals on track to shut down this year until Congress in March approved $100 billion to health care providers in the CARES Act. So far this year, 12 rural hospitals have closed across the country, including four in April before they could benefit from federal support.  With many rural hospitals cutting their most profitable services to make room for Covid patients, their thin operating margins have been stretched even further.
