That is the story of many hospitals that ProPublica investigated who sought the help of management companies that promised millions from investors, only to be “bled dry” and forced in some cases to close. Dependent upon Medicare and Medicaid lower reimbursement rates, treating higher percentages of uninsured patients along with the struggle to recruit doctors and nurses, and millions of dollars in costs for basic maintenance and repairs, rural hospitals operate on razor-thin profit margins.
