VA House Committee Passes Care in the Community Bill

House Committee on Veterans Affairs passed their legislation making permanent the Veteran’s Care in the Community and Veterans Choice Programs. Committee Chairman Phil Roe released the statement following the bill’s passage:

“For the last eleven months, the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs has worked tirelessly on behalf of our nation’s heroes. We’ve held more than 50 public hearings, visited numerous facilities around the country and worked together to tackle the tough issues. I’m pleased my legislation, the VA Care in the Community Act, has been sent to the full House for consideration.”

Now that both the House and Senate VA committees have passed legislation making these programs permanent, VA Secretary David Shulkin expects both bills will go to full votes on the floors of their respective chambers. Given that funding for the programs addressed in these bills ends at the end of 2017, Secretary Shulkin wants a quick passage so as to ensure vets in the VA system do not have to change their current course of treatment at facilities other than those owned and operated by the VA.
