Veterans Still Fear Emergency Department Bills Despite Rule Change

Last month the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) released a regulation – the Staab rule – to expand coverage of emergency department visits for veterans when visiting a local emergency department as opposed to a VA-run emergency department. Some veterans still are discouraged from seeking emergency care due to fear of high costs and denial of coverage.
While the Trump Administration agreed in June, it took the administration six more months to quietly publish the Staab rule last month. But that rule still does not revise how veterans without extra insurance, and who suffered an injury while serving, will have their emergency bills paid if they go to their closet, non-VA hospital.
